“Hey, I just found this great little
restaurant…!”
When someone makes a referral like that, you know it’s because they experienced something special…Abeel’s Restaurant in Ballston Spa is exactly that kind of place, located just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of downtown Saratoga. Tucked quietly in the pines, Abeel’s seemed like a cool, soothing getaway from the 90+ degree August heat and humidity.
We were seated immediately upon arrival in the air-conditioned main dining room. The atmosphere in Abeel’s is inviting, with light jazz playing in the background, candles on all the red tablecloths, and an air of warmth and relaxation. The menu presents a healthy array of appetizers and a select list of delicious-sounding entrees that offer everything from Specialty Pizza to a Pan Seared Duck Breast with Raspberry Liqueur Cream Sauce and Spiced Walnuts.
My partner began with the Tavern Chips appetizer, which turned out to be an excellent choice – crispy and light deep fried potatoes, served with Asiago Cheese and herbs. This is definitely an exceptional menu item, with a generous portion enough for two for only $5.99. I ordered the Oriental Pot Stickers with Soy dipping Sauce, and they were delicious as well. We both enjoyed a garden salad accompanied by fresh, warm bread straight from the oven.
For dinner, I chose the Mustard Glazed Grilled Tuna Steak ($18.99). This was done to absolute perfection…delicately flavored, just enough to enhance the flavor of the fish without overwhelming it. The accompanying vegetables were garden-fresh green beans and carrots, crisp-tender and delicioous…my dinner was fabulous and I ate every bite! My partner tried the Grilled New York Strip Steak served with flavorful Horseradish Mashed Potatoes and colorful vegetables ($18.99). It too was perfectly cooked, tender, juicy and flavorful.
With just enough room left for dessert, we decided to share a Lemon Raspberry Mousse. This was a wonderful surprise – light and tart-sweet with the tang of lemon zest, topped with fresh raspberries and artfully presented. The perfect dessert for a hot summer day!
Owners Julie and Tony Abeel have created a delightful dining experience, a casual and welcoming atmosphere slightly removed from the busy downtown pace. Friendly service, a nice selection of wines and artisan beers, and a simply distinctive menu make this a “must-do” for Saratoga area diners.
So, if you’re looking for a special dining experience in the Saratoga area, “Hey, I just found this great little restaurant…!”
